Annual Report 2006: Federal Programs for the Management of High-Level Radioactive Waste

In this report the EQB has attempted to provide the reader with an overview of the nuclear power industry in the United States, including the status of Minnesota’s two nuclear power plants – the one at Prairie Island and the one near Monticello.  The report also summarizes efforts by the federal government to locate and construct a national repository for high level radioactive wastes and addresses other issues related to management of such wastes.  The report also contains a discussion of recent activities by the federal government related to Yucca Mountain and describes upcoming activities.  Finally, the report contains a brief chronology of major events since commencement of operation of the Prairie Island and Monticello plants to assist the reader in understanding the history of nuclear power and lists a number of documents that the reader may consult for more detailed analysis of these matters.
