Action plan on sustainable development for Minnesota state government : areport to the Minnesota Environmental Quality Board by a working group of the Sustainable Communities Partnership

Over the past several years, the Sustainable Development Initiative has fostered some significant shifts in policy, yielded a large number of recommendations for additional policy change and raised the general level of awareness about the goal and benefits of sustainable development. During this time, interest in more sustainable forms of development has grown at the community level, among many businesses and in the Legislature, as well as around the world. In response, some state agencies have been reorienting their programs and launching new efforts to meet the rising demand for sustainable development information, approaches and services.

Progress among state agencies has been uneven, however, and not driven by any common vision of what sustainable development is or what common goals agencies might share.

At the request of the Environmental Quality Board, an interagency group called the Sustainable Communities Partnership completed research in 1998 that offers a more complete picture of the work agencies are already doing to promote sustainable development. The group also proposed a coherent set of next steps for building on these efforts. The group’s work is presented in this report adopted by the EQB in November 1998.
