Investing In Minnesota's future: an agenda for sustaining our quality of life

In this report to Governor Arne H. Carlson, the 30 members of the Minnesota Round Table on Sustainable Development invite Minnesotans to consider a new path to progress. Sustainable development ties together the well-being of people and communities, the health and diversity of the environment and the economy, and the quality of life for future generations.

Among the Round Table's chief proposals:

  • Raise awareness and understanding of sustainable development through schools, public forums and business forums
  • Adopt new measures of progress that reflect the interdependence of Minnesota's economy, environment and communities
  • Support communities and businesses in pursuing sustainable development
  • Adjust government purchasing practices, environmental regulations and other policies to encourage sustainable practices and business innovation
  • Establish a Minnesota Center for Sustainable Development to engage citizens, organizations, businesses, governments and communities

"We were surprised and delighted to see 30 people from such diverse backgrounds as agri-business and the Audubon Society, the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce and the Minneapolis Phillips Community find consensus around sustainable development," said Round Table co-chair Anita Ryan. Fellow co-chair Nelson T. French agreed: "When people take the time, as we did, to look at how we can make certain our grandkids have a healthy place to live, they find the answers."

Sustainable development ties together the well-being of people and communities, the health and diversity of the environment and the economy, and the quality of life for future generations.
