Project: Airport expansion options
In March 1996, the Metropolitan Airports Commission recommended expanding the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Another option, to take no action and not expand the airport, was also considered. The Metropolitan Airports Commission completed in May 1997 an environmental impact statement for both options. A third proposal — to build a new airport at another location — is not part of the environmental review because the Minnesota Legislature withdrew it from consideration. The Metropolitan Airport Commission will present the environmental impact statement to the Environmental Quality Board for review in fall 1997. The statement covers 34 environmental consequences affecting air quality, noise, wildlife, flood plains and more. The board will determine whether the statement was prepared properly and whether the environmental changes stemming from each option are acceptable.
